Welcome back to the Neural Net. Thanksgiving is behind us and it’s officially the season of gifting. Even Sam Altman agrees it’s the season of goodwill with his generous praise for Google’s latest model: “by all accounts, Google has been doing excellent work recently.” 🎁

In today’s edition: Billionaire dumps partner of 3 years for younger hotter model, Apple AI chief resigns, AI shopping assistants drive Black Friday spend, and more.

💔OpenAI Just Got Dumped by a Billionaire for a Hotter, Faster Model

Loyalty in the AI world is officially measured in hours, not years.

In a recent post that shook up the tech timeline, Marc Benioff—Salesforce CEO and a long-time evangelist for ChatGPT—announced he’s breaking up with OpenAI. After using ChatGPT daily for three years, Benioff took Google’s Gemini 3 for a two-hour test drive. The verdict?

“Holy s—. I’m not going back. The leap is insane — reasoning, speed, images, video... everything is sharper and faster.”

Why This is Awkward: Benioff’s Salesforce had previously announced a massive partnership with OpenAI to integrate GPT-5 models into their enterprise tools. At the time, Benioff praised the collaboration. Now? He says using Gemini 3 feels like "the world just changed, again."

The View From OpenAI: Publicly, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was a good sport, congratulating Google on the "great model."

Privately? It’s a different story. In a leaked internal memo obtained by The Information, Altman warned staff to prepare for "rough vibes" and potential "economic headwinds" caused by Google’s resurgence, though he insists OpenAI is catching up fast.

'Wait, We're Still Here': Anthropic Enters the Ring: Meanwhile, Anthropic just showed up to the party with Claude Opus 4.5, proving it's both a coding genius (first model over 80% on SWE-Bench) and the world's most disciplined digital assistant, complete with Chrome/Excel tools and an "endless chat" memory that literally never forgets a thing (but there’s a difference between ignores and forgets).

💡 What This Means For Your Workflow

The "best" AI tool is still a moving target, so don’t let muscle memory keep you on an inferior tool. If your current AI feels sluggish with reasoning or image generation, it might be time to take a page out of Benioff’s book and test the waters elsewhere.

Or the real pro move: embrace the idea of an AI “stack” and use the right model for the right job. Here at the Neural Net, we like Gemini for coding and images, ChatGPT for writing and reasoning, and Anthropic... well they’re still auditioning. 🙂

Heard in the Server Room

Apple AI chief John Giannandrea is out, and former Microsoft and DeepMind researcher Amar Subramanya is in after a lukewarm reception to Apple Intelligence and mounting pressure on Apple to catch up to its AI rivals. Subramanya will focus on foundation models and safety, while Apple sticks with its unusual bet: pushing intelligence onto the device itself instead of pouring billions into data centers and cloud compute.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and design legend Jony Ive spilled a few secrets about their secretive AI hardware device, which is rumored to be pocket-sized and screenless. Altman says the design is so simple, people might just say, "that’s it?" They aim to ditch the chaos and distraction of modern tech, preferring a vibe that feels like a “peaceful cabin retreat” rather than a “noisy Times Square”. Altman confirmed that a prototype is already in testing, and the device could hit the market in under two years.

The EU Commission just rolled out the "Digital Omnibus," trying to make AI and privacy rules less of a headache so Europe can join the global tech party. They're giving companies a break, delaying strict "high-risk" AI rules until late 2027 and making it easier for tech giants to use European data for AI training. It’s come with sharp criticism from all sides with tech groups arguing it’s not enough, while privacy activists warn the changes significantly dilute fundamental digital rights.

🛒 Amazon's Rufus Proves AI Shopping Assistants Are Ready for Prime Time

Amazon’s AI chatbot, Rufus, confirmed that AI is the star employee this holiday season. New data shows this AI shopping assistant, which dishes out recommendations and comparisons, drove substantially higher conversion rates for users on Black Friday. But it’s not just Rufus doing the heavy liftingAI shopping is having a moment.

The Numbers That Matter (The Conversion Game):

  • The Rufus Effect: Sessions using Rufus that resulted in a purchase surged 100% over the previous month, easily crushing non-Rufus growth (20%).

  • Wider AI Traffic: AI-driven traffic to U.S. retail sites increased by a massive 805% year-over-year.

  • The Conversion Bump: Shoppers referred from an AI source were 38% more likely to buy.

While tools like Rufus are clearly conversion magic, experts fear Black Friday's "record" revenue is mostly thanks to inflation, implying overall spending was lower than hoped. Fortunately, Rufus still has a few weeks to convince you to splurge on those fuzzy Ugg slippers.

That’s it for today. Go crush this week — catch you next time.
